Stop Worrying & Start Planning!

Life is uncertain and worry is a part of coping with that uncertainty. But there's a point at which worry can become an unhealthy viewpoint for how you see your life and the world. The good news is worry can be productive, it can prepare you for life's inevitable ups and downs...but productive worry requires a shift in mindset and a new way of thinking. Take it from a former "doomsday thinker" that possibility planning can help you turn your worry, stress, and anxiety into a more confident, peaceful, and productive person! I did it...and so can you!

The root of all fear...

Fear is the root of all worry...and the root of all fear is the unknown. We view fear, worry, and anxiety as negatives but the truth is these feelings can have a legitimate basis and are a protective mechanism our brain creates to prepare us for potential danger. Unfortunately we've been programmed to view the unknown with fear and dread because we've created a mindset of negative what ifs...what if I fail, what if something bad happens, what if I can't cope with it (whatever it is)?? And the cycle escalates and we become anxious, and the cycle of dread and worry escalates. What I hope you gain from the steps below is a plan to help you shift from thinking the worst to a more relaxed and peaceful mindset that provides you with a sense of preparedness and comfort that everything will be ok - no matter what! 

Step One: Awareness

Understanding the root cause of your worry and fear is vital to identifying the pattern of thinking that is creating the thought pattern of worry and anxiety. Sometimes it's simple and straighforward, and sometimes these patterns have developed over time due to experiences you are trying to avoid. For example I deal with health challenges that can cause very unfcomfortable and disabling symptoms, so my brain has been programmed to always be on high alert...always looking for the slightest flare of symptoms which can create an almost constant sense of anxiousness. Recognizing what has you worried, anxious or fearful - without judgement - is the first step in retraining the brain.

Life isn't always fair and doesn't always go according to plan. I can't tell you why bad things happen, but having struggled with health challenges much of my life, I can tell you that hope and faith are powerful tools. I've always envied those who say they've never had a moment of doubt that things would work out, but my truth is there have been times when I was so tired of trying and failing, I was ready to give up. But as is the blessing of the human spirit, I somehow found the strength to go on. And as is often the case when you keep your heart and mind open, new ideas and inspiration crossed my path. So when you hit bottom and find yourself losing hope, remember that whatever it is you need to move forward may be just around the corner. Just like the clouds sometimes block the sun, those clouds eventually pass and the sun shines once again. And so will you. -AC

Ok, so you have a legitimate worry. You have money problems, relationship issues, health challenges, or just find life in general stressful. One concern at a time...you don't want to overwhelm yourself...list out every possible bad thing that can happen.   Read article
